Kelvin Etemesi’s two goals against APS Bomet on Tuesday did more than win the match for KCB, they saved his future at the club.
Behind the scenes, the striker was playing for his career after head coach Robert Matano issued a clear final warning.
Etemesi had been told to deliver or face the exit door when the January transfer window opens.
Matano revealed that despite showing promise in pre-season, the former Nairobi City Stars forward had struggled to make an impact in competitive matches. Before the APS Bomet clash, Etemesi had gone 12 league games without scoring.
“He has been there but had not come out strongly in the games we have given him,” Matano said.
The coach admitted the Bomet match was the striker’s last chance to prove his value to the team.
“We had given him a deadline, and he fought for his place. Today would have been his last game at KCB if he had not performed,” Matano said.
“I cannot keep a player who is not delivering. He is earning, and if you are earning, you have to produce. It is a give-and-take situation.”
Matano added that his expectations were simple and clear goals.
“I told him that our relationship is about scoring goals, nothing more, nothing less. He did it well, and I am happy for him,” he said.
Etemesi responded in the best way possible, scoring twice to end his long goal drought and remind everyone of his quality.
The brace could mark a turning point in his KCB journey as he looks to build confidence and secure his place in the squad going into the second half of the season.
For now, the striker has taken his chance and kept his KCB career alive.
