Gor Mahia returned to winning ways and reclaimed top spot in the Sportpesa League after edging out Kakamega Homeboyz 1-0 in a tense clash at Kasarani Stadium on Wednesday evening.
A well-taken strike from stand-in captain Alpha Onyango proved the difference, easing pressure on head coach Charles Akonnor and lifting K’Ogalo to the summit of the table with 23 points.
Onyango struck in the 19th minute, firing a low long-range effort past Homeboyz goalkeeper Simon Masaka.
Wearing the armband in the absence of Austin Odhiambo, the midfielder showed leadership and composure to deliver at a crucial moment for the record champions.
The victory ended a difficult run for Gor Mahia, who were winless in three matches. The Green Army had suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat to APS Bomet, lost 1-0 to rivals AFC Leopards and were held to a draw by Bandari in their previous outings.
Gor Mahia controlled large spells of the game but had to work hard to protect their slim advantage as Homeboyz pushed for an equaliser, especially in the second half.
However, solid defending and game management saw K’Ogalo hold on for all three points.
For Kakamega Homeboyz, the defeat was a missed chance to go top of the standings. The loss leaves them seventh on the table with 20 points after their third defeat of the season.
Gor Mahia will now look to build on the win as the title race gathers pace, while Homeboyz will aim to bounce back quickly and stay in touch with the league leaders.
