APS Bomet players are celebrating after earning a bonus following the crucial 2-0 victory over Mathare United in a Kenyan Premier League clash on Sunday at the Kasarani Annex.
The win earned the team Sh1.85 million bonus, thanks to a promise made by Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, who pledged Sh50,000 to every player and officials in the matchday squad if the club wins its final five matches of the season.
APS Bomet continued their impressive fight against relegation with a strong performance that pushed them further away from the danger zone, while Mathare United’s survival hopes suffered another major blow.
The Bomet-based side opened the scoring in the 28th minute through Philip Wasai, who calmly finished past goalkeeper Kevin Ouru after a brilliant pass from experienced midfielder Francis Omondi.
APS looked dangerous throughout the first half, with Philemon Nyakwaka coming close to doubling the lead in the 35th minute, but his effort was blocked by the Mathare defence.
Mathare United made changes at halftime, bringing in Michael Oduor in search of an equaliser, but APS Bomet remained the better side after the break.
Nyakwaka again wasted a good chance in the 48th minute after delaying his shot in a one-on-one situation, allowing defenders to recover in time.
Mathare’s best opportunity came in the 57th minute when Bilal Atano connected with a corner from Oduor, but his header sailed over the bar.
Substitute Festus Kipkemoi then sealed the victory in style in the 75th minute with a stunning goal that sent APS fans into celebration.
Deputy Inspector General of Police Gilbert Masengeli, who is also the club’s deputy patron, was present to witness the important victory.
The latest win follows APS Bomet’s previous triumph over KCB and keeps alive their hopes of surviving in the top flight as the season heads into the final stretch.
