Kenya Police are through to the semi-finals of the Mozzart Bet Cup after a hard-fought 1-0 win over Shabana in a quarter-final match played at Gusii Stadium on Saturday.
The law enforcers needed just one moment of brilliance to decide the game, with Aboud Omar scoring a stunning long-range free kick late in the first half to separate the two sides.
The match was closely contested from the start, with both teams creating chances. Kenya Police threatened early through Erick Zakayo, whose header went just wide, while Shabana responded quickly with Kevin Omundi and Brian Michira both coming close.
Shabana looked dangerous, forcing goalkeeper Daniel Ogembo into several key saves, including a strong effort from Michira’s free kick. George Orako also missed a good chance for the hosts, heading over from close range.
Despite the pressure from Shabana, Kenya Police stayed dangerous on the counter-attack, testing the defence through Yves Koutiama and Brian Otieno.
The breakthrough came five minutes before halftime when Omar stepped up and curled in a powerful free kick from distance, beating goalkeeper Stephen Ochieng to give Police the lead.
In the second half, Shabana pushed hard for an equaliser, creating several chances. Byron Otieno, Pape Diallo, and Keith Imbali all tested Ogembo, but the Kenya Police goalkeeper stood firm.
As the rain poured, the match grew more intense, but Kenya Police showed strong defence and discipline to hold on until the final whistle.
The win sends Kenya Police, coached by Nicholas Muyoti, into the semi-finals, where they will face the winner between Bandari and Mfalme FC.
For Shabana, the defeat ends their cup journey as they continue to chase their first major top-flight trophy.
