Bajaber says Harambee Stars return gives him chance for redemption

Bajaber says Harambee Stars return gives him chance for redemption

Harambee Stars midfielder Mohamed Bajaber says his return to the national team is a big chance to rebuild his career after a difficult period caused by injury.

The 23-year-old has been recalled to the national squad by head coach Benni McCarthy, marking his first call-up in nearly a year. Bajaber had been out of action since he suffered an injury that ruled him out ahead of last year’s African Nations Championship (CHAN).

Since joining Tanzanian giants Simba at the start of the season, the midfielder has struggled for game time, managing only two appearances.

This is a sharp contrast to his previous form at Kenya Police, where he played a key role in helping the club win their first-ever Kenyan Premier League title and earned his place in the national team.

Speaking about his journey, Bajaber admitted the past year has been challenging.

“That’s football. One moment you are at the top, and the next you are down,” he said. “I have been dealing with injury, but I am working hard to get back to my best.”

Despite limited action in recent months, Bajaber believes the national team call-up presents the perfect opportunity to regain fitness and confidence.

“Of course it is a big chance for me. I have not been playing, so I see this as an opportunity to redeem myself, both for the country and physically,” he added.

His last competitive appearance came on January 18, when he came off the bench in Simba’s 1-1 draw against Mtibwa Sugar.

Bajaber also expressed gratitude to coach McCarthy for showing faith in him despite his recent struggles.

“His trust means a lot to me. When someone gives you a chance, you have to appreciate it and give your best,” he said.

If selected, Bajaber could make his return to international action when Harambee Stars face Estonia in an international friendly during the FIFA Series on March 27 in Rwanda.

The midfielder has promised to make the most of the opportunity, saying: “Expect me to give my all.”
