Ochieng opens up on painful injury layoff as APS Bomet fight for survival

Ochieng opens up on painful injury layoff as APS Bomet fight for survival

Former AFC Leopards forward Hansel Ochieng has revealed the emotional and physical toll of a shoulder injury that halted his impressive form this season, as he now focuses on helping APS Bomet in their battle to avoid relegation.

The 30-year-old striker had been enjoying a bright spell with the Law Enforcers in the Kenyan Premier League, notably scoring a brace in a memorable 4-1 win over arch-rivals Gor Mahia in December. However, his momentum was cut short by a shoulder injury that sidelined him for nearly six weeks.

Speaking after APS’ barren draw against Kenya Police FC in the National Police Service derby, Ochieng admitted that the period on the sidelines was one of the toughest moments of his career.

“To be injured is usually a very difficult place to be as a player,” said Ochieng. “My advice to those who are there is just to keep believing and working hard, stay with the people they love, and they will surely come back stronger.”

The striker marked his return in dramatic fashion — coincidentally against Gor Mahia — scoring in APS’ 2-1 defeat to the record champions. Although the goal was not enough to secure points, it signaled his determination to bounce back stronger.

“It is a great feeling to be back and try to help the team. I returned with a goal, but unfortunately, it was not enough to help us avoid defeat,” he added.

Ochieng once again played a key role in APS’ goalless draw against Kenya Police, though he pointed to the challenging conditions at Police Sacco Stadium as a limiting factor.

“It was a good game to play and watch, but unfortunately, the weather was not good enough to allow both of us to express ourselves fully,” he explained, referencing the waterlogged pitch.

APS Bomet currently sit 14th on the league table with 19 points, deep in the relegation zone. With the season entering a crucial phase, Ochieng believes resilience will be key to survival.

“What we have to do is to keep on fighting to get as many points as we can, and when we cannot win, we need to ensure that we do not lose either,” he said.

The Mozzart Bet-sponsored side will have a chance to climb up the standings when they host Kariobangi Sharks on Thursday, February 26 at the Kericho Green Stadium.

For Ochieng, the mission is clear — stay fit, stay focused, and lead APS’ fight to remain in the top flight.
