Kenya’s rising long-distance star Agnes Ngetich says she expects a tough race when she lines up against fellow Kenyans Hellen Obiri and Sharon Lokedi at the New York City Half Marathon on Sunday.
The 23-year-old world 10km record holder admitted that the race will come with a lot of pressure, as she will be competing against some of the best runners in the world. However, she says she is ready for the challenge and will focus on running her own race.
Ngetich is enjoying a strong start to the season. She has already won two major events this year, including the World Athletics Cross Country Championships in Tallahassee, Florida, and the Sirikwa Classic Cross Country in Kenya.
Speaking ahead of the race, Ngetich said the chance to compete in New York was arranged by her team manager, but she quickly embraced the opportunity to race on one of the sport’s biggest stages.
She said she is excited to run through the streets of New York and compete against strong rivals like Obiri and Lokedi. Despite expecting a tough contest, Ngetich said she will stay focused on her performance and see how the race unfolds.
The Kenyan runner also believes the New York course suits her style. She described the route as hilly and challenging, similar to a cross-country course, which she feels comfortable running on.
Ngetich added that her recent cross-country victories have helped prepare her mentally for the race. Winning the world cross-country title, she said, has motivated her to work harder and aim for more success this season.
Even with high expectations from fans, the young star insists she is not putting pressure on herself ahead of the race. Instead, she plans to give her best effort and see what the outcome will be.
Looking ahead, Ngetich also revealed that she may compete in both road races and track events later in the season as she continues discussions with her coach and manager.
All eyes will now be on New York as Kenyan stars prepare for another exciting showdown on the international stage.
